I am looking as far south as Big Sur and as far north as the redwood forests.

I would go North South in the Mother Lode. To the South would be Yosemite and then to cities such as Sonora, Columbia, Murphy's, Jackson, Sutter Creek and you can follow hwy 49 all the way to Nevada City.

Many winieries, galleries, small shops and B& B's. Great small restaurants

Depends whether you like the outdoors or not. Go to Yosemite, the caves in the Sierras by San Andreas, of course, the many beaches. I'm sure you'll find something. There are so many.

There are plenty of fun places in Northern California, but none of them are inexpensive.
